Session begins with a short guided meditation – using visualization and breath awareness to calm and center the mind to reduce stress. These techniques can be integrated into a daily meditation practice to use in your daily life. Navigate the depths of your consciousness using mindfulness techniques pared with yogic insights. This class will begin with gentle movement to open the neck, shoulders and hips followed by concentrated breath work to help ease you into a deeper meditation. Guided imagery and prompts will assist you to concentrate and facilitate your individual healing and calm the intensity of the mind. This class is great for beginners or anyone looking to deepen their mediation practice. This class ends with a focused relaxation so you leave feeling refreshed, renewed and balanced. Allows students to re-educate movement patterns, as well as increase body intelligence and awareness with yoga postures. In this class modifications and props are used generously in order to target specific injuries or concerns. Poses are mostly passive with some core stabilization. The aim is to learn how to adapt and modify postures in order to best serve each individual. This class is recommended for those working to recover range of motion from prior injuries, learning how to intelligently re-engage after full recovery from surgery, and older students needing to modify their practice.This class is appropriate for students who have been released from their doctor’s care and have completed physical therapy. Parameters for participation include: the ability to get up and down off the floor without assistance, freedom from medical devices, and no active disc issues. Students with joint replacements may need a private session prior to joining series to learn modifications specific to their replacement and range of motion.Please feel free to email or call the front desk for additional information or questions regarding this class and to determine if private instruction, a session with one of our holistic practitioners, or a referral to a physician, is a more appropriate direction for your specific circumstances.

During this portion of the workshop we will begin to incorporate the “eight limbs” into the physical practice that comprises Ashtanga vinyasa yoga as taught in a “Mysore style” class.In the Mysore approach, a student is given one on one instruction from the teacher. Each student is given a set portion of postures from the Primary Series to practice and master completely. When the teacher feels that they are ready, additional postures are then added. These new postures are integrated into their practice and again mastered, prior to proceeding to the next postures in the series. The student proceeds in the practice at their own pace, as they continue to master and memorize the primary series sequence.This method allows for greater depth of practice and mastery of the postures and provides a crucial foundation for the practice of Ashtanga. The beauty of this approach is that students are more easily able to experience the true meditative aspects of Ashtanga, building strength, avoiding injury, while mastering the breath, bandhas and focus.This session will also be open to questions but will be characterized more by action, breathing and concentration during an active practice.Handouts will be available for reference and to aid in future memorization.

We will begin this workshop by delving into the philosophy of Ashtanga yoga. Ashtanga is a Sanskrit word than means “eight limbs”. These limbs will be explained as they were laid out by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras thousands of years ago.Next we will then explore how they are related to the practice of Ashtanga vinyasa yoga as is currently being taught today. Ashtanga yoga is learned in what’s called a “Mysore Style” class where you develop an individualized practice with the support and guidance of a teacher. This is the traditional way of learning the sequence and allows more one on one time with the teacher. Each student must be considered as an individual and taught at a pace that is suitable for their situation in life. This is not a led class, therefore, memorization of the sequence is imperative to progress.
